First-Then Board
What does First-Then Board mean?
A first-then board is a simple visual support that shows a child exactly two things: what is happening right now and what will happen immediately after. For example, it might show 'First: shoes on' and 'Then: playground,' making it easier to get through a less preferred task by keeping a preferred one clearly in sight. Because it only covers two steps at a time, it is especially helpful for younger children or those who find longer visual schedules overwhelming.
Why this term matters
A first-then board is one of the easiest visual tools for families to make and use at home, and it can quickly reduce struggles around daily routines like getting dressed, eating, or transitioning between activities.
Canadian context
First-then boards are widely used in early intervention programs and inclusive classroom settings across Canada, and a child's therapist or educational team may recommend one as part of a broader visual support strategy — families can often get guidance on making one during therapy sessions or parent coaching programs.
