ODSP Transition Planning
Also known as: ODSP transition planning
What does ODSP Transition Planning mean?
ODSP transition planning refers to the process of preparing for a possible application to the Ontario Disability Support Program as a young person approaches adulthood. The Ontario Disability Support Program, or ODSP, may provide income and employment supports to eligible adults with disabilities. Starting to gather documentation and understand the application process well before a young person turns 18 can help families feel more prepared.
Why this term matters
Because the ODSP application process can take time and requires supporting documentation, families in Ontario are often encouraged to begin transition planning during the high school years so there is less chance of a gap in support after graduation.
Canadian context
ODSP is an Ontario program, and eligibility is decided by the program administrator based on financial and disability-related criteria. A diagnosis does not automatically qualify someone for ODSP, and it is worth reviewing the current eligibility requirements with a social worker or transition planner.
